To whom it may concern:

I am writing this letter in support of William Simmons.  Mr. Simmons was a student in my Political Science 102 class in the fall 2002 semester.  During that time, I was able to get to know him quite well both as a student and as a person.  As a result of this knowledge, I have no reservations about recommending him for any endeavor he might undertake for several reasons.

The first reason is that he is a very articulate and thoughtful student.  Students ask a variety of questions but most of them are questions about information.  Mr. Simmons' questions were very different.  They were probing questions, questions that indicated that he had done some serious thinking about the material and questions that required some thought on my part.  This is an unusual trait in freshmen or sophomores; it is a trait that Mr. Simmons has.

A second reason is his writing ability.  After thirty-one years of teaching, I firmly believe that a student who can express himself through the written word clearly and distinctly is one that is destined for success in life.  Mr. Simmons did this in both a controlled paper (one in which the topic was somewhat limited) and an open paper (one in which the student had a great deal of latitude).  Most students do well in the former but not in latter.  The latter requires more discipline and thought.  Again, Mr. Simmons' abilities impressed me.

The final point is his thoroughness.  While my course is not the most difficult, it does require a student to be thorough and diligent if they wish to get a superior grade.  Mr. Simmons did complete all of the required work plus extra and he did it with accuracy and completeness.  This, too, impressed me.

On the basis of these characteristics, ones which I have come to recognize as factors for success, I have no reservations in recommending Mr. William Simmons for any task he sets for himself.
